George Whitman, the founder of Paris’ famed Shakespeare & Co. bookstore, passed away at the age of 98 today.
Shakespeare & Co. was at the end of the block I lived on when I was in Paris for a few months in the summer of 2008; I hung out there a lot — mostly to sit, write and look at old books, but also because the store was one of the only places I could find 20-something Americans like myself in the neighborhood. It was definitely my most frequented spot in Paris.
Afterwards, I’d usually walk across to one of the islands at spend too much money at this really incredible cheese shop — but that’s beside the point.
