I stood through Fountains of Wayne, Regina Spektor and Travis to see Kings of Leon come on at the main stage that hot, hot Saturday back in 2007 on the Empire Polo Fields.
They played 6-7pm, right when the sun was setting. A time known as “Magic Hour”, or “Golden Hour”, because of the change in light passing through more atmopshere, creating a vibrant glow. If you’ve been to Coachella, you know the colors that rocket across the sky. It just about breaks your heart.
Standing there, I watched the sunset hit that stage like the golden fist of an angry god.
I’ll never forget it.
From the side of that stage I saw Regina bouncing up and down to “Charmer”, and James Murphy (who played later that night), quietly watching from stage left. They say a show can make a career, and from that show on Kings of Leon certainly made “it”.
Then things took a turn.
But after watching the final version of “Radioactive”, and hearing that their new album was called “Come Around Sundown,” it made me think, just maybe, they remember that day too.
And if their whole career is getting back to that one magical moment back in April, we are in for a big, big treat.
